What is SEO? Search Engine Optimization. Okay, that's what it stand for, but what IS SEO?
SEO is the process of getting traffic from the "free," "organic," or "natural" search results on search engines. Okay - maybe that's too "geek speak". The idea behind SEO is when someone searches (Googles) for a product or service that you provide - YOU WANT TO APPEAR IN THE SEARCH RESULTS!
What is an example of SEO? Let's say you own a flower shop. When someone searches for "a dozen roses" or "flower delivery" - You want your company information to show up in the TOP search results. SEO is what it takes to make that happen.
SEO is a moving target and it probably always will be. So now what? Well let's put things in perspective. If you're looking to refinance a house do you just apply online? Sure you can, but I'd recommend getting your ducks in a row first. Hmmm how could that apply to SEO? How do I get my ducks in a row for organic SEO? Start with the basics. Is my site Fast, Functional & Mobile Friendly? Yes! It matters!
Why is speed a factor in SEO? Two reasons why speed is a factor in SEO: Impatience & Google.

Additionally, page loading time is becoming a more important factor when it comes to search engine rankings. Boom! If your sites takes more than 3 seconds to load, people leave and go somewhere else which has a negative domino affect on SEO.
What does functionality have to do with SEO? It doesn't matter how good it looks if it doesn't work.

Sites should be simple and intuitive providing a positive experience for the user! All those bells and whistles take processing power (time to load) - and they may not work as well on mobile.
What does Responsive Design have to do with SEO?
On April 21, 2015 Google announced sites must be Mobile Friendly or it will have a significant impact on search results. In 2017, 71 percent of all USA traffic is mobile devices.
These are the first three steps to dial in SEO organically. Google says your site should load in less than 2 seconds. We target under one second. When it comes to usability (functionality), it has to work ( the navigation links, the mobile menu, on all browsers, on all devices, all the time ). Period! And finally, with mobile usage over 70% of all browsing... if it's not mobile friendly, you may as well close shop. You'll have better luck selling a bride a ketchup Popsicle as she walks down the aisle.

Make no mistake, these are the basics and some are simple and others are super complex. To me, the start of any project is the basic fundamentals. The first 11 have the longest lasting impact (yes they take the longest to make an impact, but they lasting affect is forever).
